Zephyr Adventures Customers Say:

I can say that I walked from one side of England to the other along the path where the historical stone wall of Roman emperors once stood. Amazing!

Call me crazy, but the rugged terrain and sometimes rainy weather actually added to the experience, for me. It was truly transporting.

Select An Adventure in England

Hadrianís Wall country is quite simply a walkerís paradise with its stunning landscapes and sense of history, from the period of Roman history that produced Hadrian's Wall to the many battles between Scotland and England to the bloody feuds of the Border Reivers. Built in AD122 under the orders of Emperor Hadrian, the wall stretched for 73 miles between the tidal Tyne at Newcastle in the East to the Solway Firth in the west, and was successful in controlling the northern frontier of the Roman Empire. In 1987 Hadrianís Wall was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is the most protected landscape anywhere in the United Kingdom and ranks alongside the pyramids in Egypt and the Taj Mahal in India.

May 2003 saw the opening of the Hadrianís Wall Path National Trail, an 84 mile unbroken trail from Wallsend (Segedunum) in the east to Bowness-on-Solway (Maia) in the west. It passes through some of the most beautiful parts of England, from rolling fields and rugged landscapes to the vibrant cities of Newcastle and Carlisle. The trail skirts a number of fascinating Roman sites including Birdoswald Fort, Walltown Quarry, Great Chesters Fort, Steel Rigg, Vindolanda, Housteads Fort, Brocolitia Fort, Chesters Fort and Segadunum, as well as numerous Roman turrets and milecastles.
